Today was the first Sunday of our church search which will cover many miles and areas in Central Arkansas.
Our first visit was First Baptist Church of Benton (fbcbenton.org). We attended the morning service at 10:30. First thoughts on the atrium: wow. It's tall, elegant, and very nice. The auditorium is very very similar to our former church in Nashville just a smaller version. Most of the auditorium was full. A few weeks ago, around 1,000 people attended worship. 200 youth. Anyways, the media in the church is good. Lots of nice widescreen LCD TVs. Image magnification on the screens (video of the speaker on the screens for those in attendance). DVDs of the service on sale.
The music was not my personal favorite kind. I'm not sure whether today was an abnormal Sunday but it was all hymns. I like a few hymns but otherwise I'm not much of a hymn person. The worship leader had a good voice, though there were some microphone issues that hindered. After the slow set of hymns (most hymns are slow....and plain....and repetitive), the sermon was good. Short but good. The whole service lasted around an hour.
Overall, the church looks good. Worth a second visit. The youth choir is active and large. The youth group is large and active. The people were friendly. We'll likely visit again soon.
That concludes church search day one. Check back next week for an update...
This is my last post of 2006. Happy New Year!
